The past is definitely prologue for this show as we meet twins: the perfect Lee Yoo-yeon (Moon Joo-yeon) and her decidedly imperfect brother, Lee Dong-shik (played as a teenager by Lee Do-hyun). And with Jin-goo showing us exactly what he can do as the unhinged crazed king in his dual role in the 2019 Sageuk The Crowned Clown, (between Jingoo and Jingoo, I still think Jingoo was better than Jingoo), it’s not hard to wonder what will happen if and when his facade cracks.Īfter a cold open in a field of reeds in Munju City, where two men discover a corpse, Beyond Evil zips us back to October 2000. Beneath his perfectly-coiffed model looks, impeccable pedigree and first class education, he’s a man wound tight. And if the over the top antics he engages in are part of a deliberately crafted… facade… by the character, rather than a misstep by the actor, then instead of being over-acting it is instead a brilliant performance by a classically-trained artist who knows exactly how to misdirect an audience.Īlso an artist of some calibre, Yeo Jin-goo (playing elite golden boy, Lieutenant Han Joo-won) may be more understated initially but he brilliantly embodies an entitled member of a ruling class who’s long been led to believe he’s always the smartest person in the room and struggles to know how to act once he makes his first big mistake. But like a lot of what happens in these two hours, you’re left wondering if he’s genuinely crazy or deliberately crafting an image of craziness. Shin Ha-kyun (playing small town cop, Lee Dong-shik) is doing some serious old-school scenery chewing with this one and for most of the first two episodes I found it distracting. And, as with the perfect small town fantasy that was Twin Peaks, it might take an outsider to crack open this nut’s secrets. Everyone has a secret, possibly nobody is innocent. Because facades are ultimately what Beyond Evil is all about. And with the body parts piling up, it’s time for all those secrets to be dredged up too.Īnd since I’ve now used the word facade once, I shall have to find 15 synonyms for it. What Liane Moriarty called Big Little Lies. There’s an air of Twin Peaks small town gothic to this show a sense of a facade of small town life hiding a darkness the denizens either ignore or deliberately plaster over in the name of community solidarity. I’ve certainly got a lot of speculating going on. And – since its specialty is deliberate ambiguity – somewhere to speculate. Still, I’m hoping there’s an appetite for having somewhere to discuss the show. I’m a bit late to this party as I was struggling with real life issues around housing for a few months and so three quarters of Beyond Evil has already aired. And so here we are – my first open thread! As I breezed through the first two gripping but unsettling two episodes, I looked for somewhere to discuss the show and found little but a first episode review at Dramabeans. I’ve picked up the new psychological crime thriller Beyond Evil, with industry veterans Shin Ha-kyun and Yeo Jin-goo. This is a bit of an experiment so we’ll see how it goes for this show. I’m trying something a bit new this month and instituting my first open thread.
Not letting the sun go down on anger is not letting Satan wreak havoc in your heart and mind. Whether it’s a righteous anger or misguided anger, it’s OK! As long as you don’t sin and as long as you understand that today is the day to be right with God and your fellow believers. What? Pastors get angry? Yes they do! Like the rest of us, they experience anger, too. “Be angry and do not sin do not let the sun go down on your anger,” God is the ultimate problem solver! Lean on Him when you are seeking wisdom and answers to the things that seem hard or impossible. We can trust Him to lead us in the right direction! You should never lead without God’s guidance. God has the ultimate perspective and plan. “For My thoughts are not your thought, Nor are your ways My ways, says the Lord, For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.” The congregation is intelligent enough to pick up on this and ministry-burnout is sure to follow. You may be a great speaker, a charismatic leader, or a talented musician but you will quickly grow tired when doing things in your own strength. “Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.”ĭon’t lead or minister from your own strength. Remain steadfast in the truth and God’s blessing will be upon you! Your calling as a pastor is to do the latter in love! Ministry can get so focused on trying to win converts and please people that truth is often sacrificed. In this day it’s more acceptable to be relevant than to speak the Truth. ” And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Make your desire and intent known to the Lord and let Him direct your path. That’s downright terrifying when you think of the impact of any decision. Leadership is all about making big decisions, while leading others. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. A great way to stay faithful in your ministry is to keep a servant’s heart and attitude at all times. A leader is in fact a servant, not a king, not a dictator and definitely not the boss of the congregation. Ouch, this is a lesson better learned early on, than experienced the hard way. “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” It is then when we lift our heads to our Redeemer, Who commands us to not be afraid! The enemy will accuse us and remind us of our insignificance. Taking responsibility to faithfully represent God and His light, as well as taking care of your congregation is a big deal. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Only by the grace and strength of God can we move through this life and help others along the way. Let Him reveal His plan to you and know that you will never have all the answers. Remember to stay humble and curious God wants to show you incredible things that you can’t even fathom. Sometimes we can let ego get in the way of what God wants us to do. “Call unto Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” Top Leadership Bible Verses For Pastor Appreciation Month Looking to encourage your Pastor this year? UPDATE: Have a look at my new post: Installing Adobe Reader DC with Intune Win32 application deployment In the late 1990s, people who worked in computer science made the term official. In the 1960s, the word was used as a different name for statistics. The term "data science" has been around for a long time, but its meaning and associations have changed over time. This analysis assists data scientists in posing and answering questions such as ”What occurred?”, ”Why did it occur?”, ”What will occur”, and ”What can be done with the results?”. It is a method for analyzing massive volumes of data that integrates principles and practices from the domains of mathematics, statistics, artificial intelligence, and computer engineering. If they are to unearth actionable intelligence for their organizations, Successful Data Scientists must be well-versed in all aspects of the data science life cycle and possess the adaptability and depth of knowledge necessary to maximize investment returns at every stage of the process.īut, what is data science exactly? Data science is the study of data to obtain business-relevant insights. Successful data professionals of today know they need more than just the ability to analyze massive datasets, mine databases for value, and write data-related code. When you hear the word "science”, you might think of a field that uses systematic steps to get results that can be tested and you would be correct! Data science is rapidly becoming one of the most sought-after fields for qualified individuals. In this article, we talk about the algorithmic importance of data science with real-life examples showcasing its value in our modern world. We have text, audio, video, and image data available in vast quantities. Information is collected by online systems and payment portals in e-commerce, medicine, finance, and every other part of life. Modern organizations have a lot of data because there are so many devices that automatically collect and store information. Let's take a look at what data science can do for us.ĭata science is important because it uses tools, methods, and technology to find meaning in data. Executives have heard that data science is a sexy field and that data scientists are like modern-day superheroes, but most still don't know how valuable data science is to their organizations. Every day, it becomes clearer that processing and analyzing data brings a lot of value, and that's where data science algorithms comes in. Sources estimate that bad data costs the US up to $3.1 trillion a year, making data science all the more important. It’s a universal truth that well-managed data rules the modern world. Whether we notice it or not, data science is present in our day-to-day lives, especially with the intensive use of marketing, logistics, and healthcare applications to name a few. Thus, data science is a game changer for organizations looking to unlock the potential of their data and increase the value of their insights. Without data science and next-generation technology transforming data into actionable insights, basic data remains meaningless. Data Science Algorithms Explained On Real Life Examples Right in the frickin' intro, we have the reimagined death of Kitty Kitten being beheaded by an explosion during the Buff Clan's attack in Ajian. While the original series itself can be pretty gruesome in terms of how the characters die from one another (as seen here ), Be Invoked delivers the horror in spades due to how their deaths are presented relentlessly and how the war between Ideon and the Buff Clan escalates rapidly. The first incident is the main reason the Solo Ship's crew is mistrustful of Gije, as he was the one who ordered Aijan's bombardment. The destruction wreaked upon its surface was so intense and demoralizing that when the Solo Ship returnes in a later episode, its survivors pulled a Face–Heel Turn under a deal brokered with the Buff Clan. As punishment for helping the Solo Ship's humans, the Buff Clan devastates Ajian with an orbital bombardment.Karala and her unborn son's murder at the hands of Harulu, with their father's approval, is what ultimately leads Ide to decide humanity is beyond saving and Invoke their destruction. It also shows why things went as disastrously badly as they did in Be Invoked. And you'll start to think about how many times Ide has done this before. Because Ide sees them as pure souls that it can preserve as a proof that their generation of civilization isn't completely hopeless, it will just leave others to their deaths which results in the anime's infamous Downer Ending. Though Ide supposedly keeps on protecting the denizens of Solo Ship, a grim realization appears that all Ide is protecting is Lou and Messiah, the unborn child of Bes and Karala. And the characters eventually realized that Ideon resides as some sort of a guardian god of their universe that utterly despises war between the universe's denizens. Sounds kinda majestic, isn't it? Later episodes revealed that Ide only collects "pure and untainted souls", which turns out to be souls of babies who never grew into adults. As the story goes, it is told that Ide (the main consciousness behind Ideon) is a combination of souls of the past civilizations in the form of a somewhat intelligent battle mech. But that itself is not the creepiest aspect of Ideon: Now have it piloted a bunch of not mentally sound children. To put it this way, imagine piloting a mech that is more like an Eldritch Abomination than a traditional mech, and it has the capability of leveling an entire universe. Even worse? She is pregnant at the time as well. How the Buff Clan handles The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry. Seis is a short word and only has one syllable, so it doesn’t require one. We won’t get too much into it right now, but basically, one of these rules is that words that end in vowel + s, like this one, that are stressed on the last syllable, always have an accent. The reason for this change is based on the rules of Spanish accents. E → É: And finally, the last change, is one that we’ll only see in a couple more numbers. That’s why, to make it look more aesthetic, it changes to i. The combination of the letters c + y is extremely uncommon in Spanish, and in fact, it only exists in a few foreign words such as cyan. In Spanish, the word for “and” is y, so if we wanted to put these words together, it would look like this: diec yséis. Y → I: The second change is another letter changing and it’s very similar to the previous one.In this case, what’s the letter that’s after c? That’s right, an i, which means it has the exact same sound as in diez. Moreover, for other reasons, we don’t use the letter z in front of those two vowels. In Spanish, the letter c in front of the vowels e and i has the exact same sound as z (which is like the “th” sound in “thanks”), while every other time it would have a k sound. Don’t let this confuse you, you’re better than that. Z → C: The first change is the z we had in the word die z that turns into a c in die ciséis, as well as in the words for the following numbers ( die cisiete, die ciocho…).Let’s analyze these changes step by step: You might notice it’s not written exactly the same way, but that happens for a reason. This is why first we’ll begin by explaining the hardest one, and then we promise the next numbers will be incredibly easy to understand.ĭieciséis (16) is nothing more than diez y seis (“ten and six”) put together. Just so you know, once we reach number 16, numbers start following a clear pattern, even though it might seem confusing at first. It’s time to start learning some more numbers. 1 – uno (or un if it’s in front of a noun, because it becomes an article, for example: un perro → “a dog” ).(They are, after all, some of the most important numbers in learning Spanish!) Normally one of the first things you learn in Spanish is how to count from 0 to 10, so you might already know this, but we’ll show it here just in case. In today’s article, we’re going to teach you everything you need to know about using numbers in Spanish, including how to count, write, and pronounce Spanish numbers from 1 to 100 and higher! We realize they’re not the most exciting topic when learning a language, but if we all use them when we speak our native language, what makes you think you won’t need them in Spanish? We don’t need to be experts, but we all need numbers and we all use them. We can count our money, or how many cartons of milk we have left, or how many steps there are from the entrance of your house to your room, or maybe how many days there are left until a special occasion. We all need to count things sometimes as well. We all look at the clock a few times a day, we go shopping and look at the prices of products… But we all still use numbers all the time, whether you like them or not. Most of us don’t need to do any complicated math on a regular basis, unless that happens to be part of your job description. We’ll probably agree that numbers are an incredibly important part of our lives. Surely you already know how to say a few numbers in Spanish, but have you mastered them? And no, we’re not asking you if you have a PhD in Mathematics. Surtz, a learned professor of literature, did distinguish between More and his characters, and he agreed with Chambers that Utopia is the best state possible if one would rely on reason alone. Hexter never distinguished between the characters and the author of Utopia, and he considered the Utopians to be true Christians. Hexter, a historian, took Utopia more literally than Chambers. Chambers’ classic position that Utopia satirized the abuses in Europe by presenting a serious political ideal. Both, in wholly different ways, developed R.W. But before looking for the basis of this current view of More, let’s turn to a brief review of Utopian criticism as it has developed over the last forty years.ĭuring the 1950s and 1960s, J.H. Hexter and Edward Surtz, S.J., were the two most noted interpreters on Utopia. Accordingly, they were asked to edit and translate the Yale edition of Utopia, published in 1965. They explain Utopia as an attempt by More “to resolve the contradictions of his own divided impulses’’ or as an example of More’s youthful progressive spirit-a spirit that would become pathologically conservative in later life. If they do, the explanation given is psychological. Those holding the opinions just cited do not generally try to reconcile their interpretations with the corpus of More’s work or with the author’s reputation as prudent statesman, orthodox philosopher, and canonized saint. Such is the diverse opinion and confusion surrounding this little book. And the Soviets, seeing Utopia as one of the early communist prototypes, erected a monument honoring More near the center of Moscow. The Euthanasia Society of America considers the author of Uto pia as an early friend and patron of their particular cause. Many today herald Utopia as embodying “distinctively modern elements” in calling for radical political and economic reform others praise Utopia for advocating “open-ended dialogue” about fundamental ethical and political issues. This seems to be the sorry state of scholarly affairs as one turns to what is perhaps the most debated literary work of the Renaissance. In the middle are the many who do not believe truth exists and would define wisdom as a relative balance of moderate opinions. And Shakespeare is not to be studied to understand better the perennial truths of life, but as a vehicle for understanding isolated individuals who have not found it possible or necessary to confront vigorously the misconceptions and factual errors of those who blithely dismiss any one who turns to the great literature of the past for what was recognized as literature’s first and greatest function: to artfully and pleasantly teach wisdom to any who labored valiantly enough to acquire it. Thomas Cromwell, for example, becomes “the most remarkable statesman of the sixteenth century,” while Thomas More becomes a self-seeking and deceitful villain. These revisionists are having a dramatic effect on the commonplace understanding of the Renaissance, introducing as they have a whole new cast of heroes in an attempt to dethrone the old. Basic to this revision is the elimination of “nature” in favor of cultural fabrications of power they would also eliminate allusions to the soul in favor of assumptions concerning the historically conditioned self. On the one side are the few but well organized and well-positioned revisionists and New Historicists who wish to give validity to their radical revision of “values,” human nature, and political life. Anyone who has been a part of Renaissance literary studies over the last ten years realizes that the Renaissance has become a battleground of intense scholarly interest. “The struggle is not merely over an isolated work of genius but over a whole culture”-so says Stephen Greenblatt about Thomas More’s Utopia. By thinking through the limits and possibilities of political life, as presented in “Utopia,” the careful reader imitates Cicero and Thomas More by preparing for politics through the careful study of great literature. |
